Australia Vietnam Skills Conference

2021

Glyphs, Illustrator, After Effects

Personal

As a Vocational Education and Training Ambassador, I attended the 2019 Australia Vietnam Skills Conference, a showcase of vocational skills intended to strengthen bonds between both Australian and Vietnamese vocational education institutes and governments. Revisiting conference materials, I developed a new identity system to match the more accessible nature of skills-based training that separates it from other forms of education.

Respective cultural design expressions, specifically embellished decorative Vietnamese wild postings, and Romanised serif type, influenced the design outcome through the overarching theme of cross-cultural collaboration.

A monochromatic colour scheme and primarily printed materials reflect the approachability of the Vietnamese posters and allow type to stand on its own.

Outcome

Objective: Communicate vocational training’s less formalised nature.

Research and Inspiration: Vietnamese street promotion and westernised type.

Technique: ‘Bubble type’ rejected in favour of more mature fluid type, sketched physically.

Refinement: Sketch refined through Glyphs, layout emulating tear-off flyer built in Illustrator.

Medium: Printed on Canon Pixma TR4560, mimicing crude Vietnamese prints.
